Zealand Facts and Figures
Forest Enterprises has 29 forests consisting of 10,582 hectares in the Gisborne region.
The Gisborne region is situated in the east of New Zealand's North Island and meets all Forest Enterprises criteria for afforestation - good growth rates, land of medium contour, an extensive forestry infrastructure and an excellent log export port. (You can read about infrastructure challenges facing the East Coast here)
As at 1 April 1999 it was estimated that there were 140,000 hectares of planted forests in the Gisborne region. There is a sophisticated mill in the region built by Juken Nissho (photo below).

Major forest owners (in addition to Forest Enterprises Investors) include Juken Nissho and Rayonier New Zealand Limited. The average annual log output for the period 2001 - 05 is predicted to be almost 1.3 million cubic metres.
The volume of log exports through the Port of Gisborne has increased dramatically in recent years. Major log export facilities exist at the Port with a log marshalling area covering 14 hectares. The Port is currently undergoing a NZ$16 million development programme to ensure that it remains one of the most efficient ports in the country and is well-placed for the 21st century. In the year to June 2000, the port handled over 400,000 tonnes of log exports.
