Forest Enterprises is one of the largest forestry businesses in Wairarapa and Gisborne. We currently have more than 37,000 hectares of sustainable Radiata pine forest under management, and in 2022 we’re on target to manage the harvest of 900,000 tonnes of logs.
Wairarapa
We manage 21 investment forests in the Wairarapa, a total of around 9,000 hectares.
Harvest is well underway in the Wairarapa and continues to increase as we bring more of our first rotation investments into the harvest programme. We produce around 350,000 tonnes per year from our harvesting investment forests – two-thirds going to Wellington’s CentrePort for export and the balance to domestic timber mills in the region.
Our Masterton-based forestry team undertakes the full management and supervision of our investors’ forests in Wairarapa.
We also manage 15,000 hectares in the Southern North Island for an international forestry investment fund, and manage an additional 300,000 tonnes per year from their harvest. Read more on our Sustainability page.
Gisborne
About half of our managed investment estate is located in the Gisborne region on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island. We manage 30 investment forests in Gisborne, more than 10,000 hectares.
In 2021, our Gisborne harvest volume was around 313,000 tonnes and this annual volume is expected to increase as more of our forests reach maturity. Around 85% of logs produced from our Gisborne estate are exported through Eastland Port. The balance goes to satisfy the demand of local sawmills.
With this expanding volume, so too is our team. Under the leadership of Gisborne Regional Manager Dan Fraser, our Gisborne-based forestry team undertakes the full forest management and supervision of our estate in the region.
Hawkes Bay
We manage four forestry investments located in Hawkes Bay, comprising 1,200 hectares. They are our youngest forests and their harvest is still a few years away from commencement.
Our Hawke’s Bay Operations Manager oversees all forestry and harvesting activity in our managed forests in the region.
